Driving Barra to Patzcuaro
August 2, 2007 7:36 AM

What's the best route to drive from Barra de Navidad or Melaque in Jalisco to Patzcuaro, Michoacan this December? How long will your recommended route take?

One possibility is Highway 80 to Guadalahara and then south via the newish toll road. Another is down the coast on Highway 200 to 37D (the toll road). I've also heard of a route through Colima and Guzman.

And, please, spare me the Mexican highway horror stories. We've driven lots in Mexico and are very comfortable with the risks and rewards.

You haven't defined "best" really. The fastest? safest? most scenic?

In any case, I'll ping my parents and uncle and post again here. They drive (or are driven) a lot down there between Guanajuato, Guadalajara, Zamora, Patzcuaro and Morelia and just spent the month of June down there. My uncle lives near Zamora and also goes for for business reasons to all the above places...

Thanks vacapinta.

Well, "best" would be some trade-off between fastest and most scenic, although we'd like to get it done in a day of not too crazy driving. The Mexican tourism people say the 200/37D route takes "six hours and fifty minutes".

If "safety" means "4WD-only" or "this road tends to wash out in December" then I guess that's a factor, too. On the other hand, we're not too concerned about windy mountain roads or livestock on the highway.

We actually have to return from Patzcuaro at least as far as Manzanillo so we might consider going one way and coming back another.
