Toronto or Winnipeg?
August 14, 2007 7:10 PM

I may be taking an impulse drive to Toronto or Winnipeg in a couple of weeks.

Winnipeg is about 15 hours and Toronto is 12. I can do the drives in a day, no problem, so I'll have 4 days in whatever city. What to do, what to see. Which would you rather go to?

I have to go on vacation soon or else I'm going to go postal. I want out of this country briefly and my trip to Argentina fell through. I can drive to Canada which is ideal, because I really need to sit in a car for a day to clear myself up. I'm stoked just about going.

Money isn't that big of an object, but I'd like to do the ordeal for less than 500 USD, so hostels are in the picture.

Cultural sights are ok. Not big on clubs. Looking more to just wander around and chill the eff out for a few days.

I cannot speak to the quality of the hostel but there is a hostel on the corner of King and Bathurst: Global Village. They're right downtown so would be an ideal place to stay, I would think.

When are you coming to town?

Go to Toronto. Most Canadians would say "Is there even a choice?" but I don't feel quite that way. Winnipeg is fine but Toronto is a large city with many diverse areas, so it has much to offer, whatever you are looking for. I would pick some neighborhoods and wander for a nice relaxed vacation. Posts with the Toronto tag have most of the area recommendations I would make. Torontoist may be of help.
Also, the later it gets in the year the less you want to be in a windy and cold prairie city, unless you really like outdoor sports.

Winnipeg may have some stuff going on, but now that it's fall and the tourist season is mostly over, it may not. You missed the Winnipeg Comedy Festival by 6 months. Toronto always has something going on. Winnipeg is 600K people vs over 3M people in Toronto - 5x as many people means there's a lot more to do. Plus all the rich people live here, so we get stuff like the big museums and opera houses and stuff.
